Dear Miami-Dade Golfer:
According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, every night in the United States, 57,859 homeless veterans look for a safe place to sleep. 144,842 veterans use homeless housing programs each year and the number of homeless female veterans rose more than 140% from 2006 to 2010.
Veterans are homeless due to an extreme shortage of affordable housing, livable income and access to health care – a large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse, which are compounded by a lack of family and social support networks. Additionally, military occupations and training are not always transferable to the civilian workforce, placing some veterans at a disadvantage when competing for employment.
Miami-Dade Parks, in partnership with the Miami Veteran’s Administration Hospital, is collecting supplies for homeless veterans. The list of items needed can be found below. We will be accepting donations of these items at our golf courses through Memorial Day. Every item will help. If you’re not planning on playing golf this week, we are open from sunrise to sunset every day. Please stop by at your convenience and drop off something in our collection boxes. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
